3 Words That Could Improve Your Email Opens

Email lists are still you most powerful marketing tools. We get prospects . Then we research the topics that are relevant to our list , write the message, design the graphics and carefully choose the call to action. But none of that matters unless someone opens our email.

The success of an email campaign may begin with just a few words: the subject line.

Marketing expert Jay Schwedelson regularly demonstrates that small changes in wording can create measurable improvements in email performance. Instead of rewriting an entire campaign, businesses should begin by testing the language that appears first in the recipient’s inbox.

A subject line does not need to explain everything inside the email. Its job is to create enough interest for the reader to take the next step.

The goal is not to write the perfect subject line. The goal is to earn the open.

One effective strategy is to begin with a number. Numbers make information feel specific, organized and easy to understand. A subject line such as “3 Ways to Improve Your Retirement Plan” may feel more approachable than a general statement about retirement planning.

Questions can also be powerful because they invite the reader into a conversation. “Are You Ready to Retire?” may generate more curiosity than “Preparing for Retirement.”

Businesses should also experiment with extremely short subject lines. Two or three carefully chosen words can stand out in an inbox filled with longer, more polished messages. Even using lowercase letters occasionally may make an email feel more personal and less promotional.

Personalization can help, but it should go beyond inserting someone’s first name. A company name, industry, location or specific interest may make the message feel more relevant to the recipient.

Relevance creates attention, and attention creates the opportunity for a conversation.

The biggest lesson is that we should never assume they already know which subject line will perform best. The audience ultimately makes that decision.

We should continually test length, questions, numbers, curiosity, personalization and different wording. Two subject lines that appear nearly identical may produce very different results.

Testing does not require rebuilding the entire email campaign. Change one element, compare the results and use what you learn in the next message.

One stronger subject line can improve the performance of every email that follows.

The highest-performing email senders do not depend entirely on personal preference or guesswork. They pay attention to what their audience opens, reads and responds to.

Small changes become meaningful improvements when we are willing to test, learn and adjust.

humanity over digital perfection

The answer is not less technology. It is learning how to use technology without removing the human being from the communication. That may be one of the most important lessons for small businesses in 2026. AI can help us work faster. It can research a topic, organize information, create a first draft, help with follow-up, and turn one good idea into several pieces of content. For a small business, that can save real time.
