How Often Should You Update Content?

Updating an old statistic on a forgotten webpage may sound like routine housekeeping. In today’s search environment, however, it can be an important visibility strategy.

AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity look for current, trustworthy information when building answers. A page that has not been reviewed recently may be passed over for a source that appears more current—even when the older page was originally well written.

Check out this data. Research from AirOps examined more than 4,000 pages cited by ChatGPT across 900 high-intent searches and 15 industries. It found:

  • More than 70% of cited pages had been updated during the previous 12 months.

  • 53.4% had been refreshed within six months.

  • 35.2% had been updated within three months.

  • Pages left unchanged for more than a year experienced a citation-likelihood decline of over 50%.

  • More than 60% of pages cited for commercial searches had been updated within six months.

That last point is especially important for businesses. People are asking AI to recommend a service, compare providers or answer a question connected to a purchasing decision, current information may carry additional weight. It's time to update.

What Is a Recency Signal?

A recency signal is an indication that a webpage’s information is current. It may include a visible “last updated” date, recently verified statistics, current examples, working links, updated product information or changes reflected in the page’s structured data and sitemap.

Simply changing the date is not a meaningful update. The content itself should be reviewed and improved. AI search systems need evidence that the information is still accurate—not merely a newer timestamp.

When Should You Update a Page?

There is no universal schedule. AirOps found that fast-changing subjects such as finance, software and news may need to be reviewed at least every three months. Educational and evergreen material may remain useful for 12 months or longer.

A practical schedule is:

  • Review rapidly changing topics every three months.

  • Review service, product and comparison pages every three to six months.

  • Review evergreen educational articles at least once a year.

  • Update a page immediately when a law, statistic, price or industry standard changes.

This does not mean rewriting every article from beginning to end. Check the facts, replace outdated statistics, repair links, improve the answer and add information people are currently asking about.

A 2026 Seer Interactive analysis reinforces this distinction: among cited pages with readable dates, 72% had been updated within the previous year, while only 42% had originally been published during that period. The advantage came from maintaining useful older pages—not constantly replacing them with new ones.

Freshness alone cannot guarantee an AI citation. Relevance, accuracy, authority and clear organization still matter. But if two pages answer the same question equally well, the one showing current, verified information may have the stronger recency signal.

humanity over digital perfection

The answer is not less technology. It is learning how to use technology without removing the human being from the communication. That may be one of the most important lessons for small businesses in 2026. AI can help us work faster. It can research a topic, organize information, create a first draft, help with follow-up, and turn one good idea into several pieces of content. For a small business, that can save real time.
