People On The Street Test

The Three Pillars of Effective Content Creation

Content creation is not just about posting more often. It is about posting with purpose.

Before you publish anything, use what I call the “people on the street test.” Imagine you are standing on a busy street corner. Strangers are walking past. They do not know you, they are not looking for your business, and they are thinking about their own lives.

Now imagine showing them your post.

  1. Would it make them stop?

  2. Would it make them ask a question?

  3. Would it make them think, “That sounds like me”?

If the answer is no, the content may need to be stronger.

Effective content usually falls into three important pillars: awareness, trust building, and prospect generation. Each one has a different purpose, but together they help people notice you, believe you, and eventually reach out.

1. Awareness Content

Awareness content is designed to get attention.

This is the content that speaks to a problem, question, frustration, or situation your audience already recognizes. It is not about showing off what you know. It is about showing that you understand what your audience is thinking about.

For example, instead of saying, “We help people with retirement planning,” a stronger post might say, “Many people think retirement planning is only about how much they have saved. The bigger question is how those savings will create income.”

That kind of content makes people pause because it reframes the issue.

2. Trust-Building Content

Once people notice you, they need a reason to trust you.

Trust-building content shows that you know what you are talking about. It explains, teaches, clarifies, and simplifies. This could be a short article, a myth-versus-fact post, a common question, a simple checklist, or a quick explanation of a confusing topic.

The goal is for someone to think, “This person understands the issue, and they can explain it in a way that makes sense.”

Trust is built when your audience sees that you are not just trying to sell something. You are helping them make better decisions.

3. Prospect-Generating Content

Prospect-generating content invites people to take the next step.

This is where you move from education to conversation. You may ask someone to comment, request a checklist, schedule a call, download a guide, or ask a question.

The key is to make the next step simple and relevant.

Strong prospect-generating content does not pressure people. It gives them a reason to respond.

When you combine all three pillars, your content becomes more strategic. Awareness helps people see you. Trust-building helps them believe you. Prospect-generating content helps them start a conversation.

And that is the real purpose of content: not just to be seen, but to create meaningful opportunities.

The Real Goal: Make Content Feel Human

The strongest content strategy includes all three pillars. Awareness gets attention. Trust-building earns credibility. Prospect-generating content creates opportunity.

But the foundation underneath all of it is human connection.

What Are the 5 Social Media Culture Shifts Shaping Marketing in 2026?

For years, businesses were encouraged to make every social media post look professionally produced. In 2026, content that appears too polished, staged or artificial may create distance instead of trust. Audiences increasingly want to see the people behind a business. A short video from an employee, a customer story, a candid explanation from an owner or a firsthand answer from an expert can feel more credible than a perfectly designed but impersonal graphic.

For years, many companies used social media as a place to share announcements, greetings, promotions, and updates. While those posts may still have a place, they are no longer enough to earn attention. In July 2026, social platforms, AI-powered search, and recommendation engines are rewarding content that solves real questions. That means the content most likely to be seen, saved, shared, and trusted is content that helps someone understand a problem or make a better decision.
